PU's dilemma over mercy plea persists
CHANDIGARH: The Panjab University on Thursday almost decided to let the students have another go at their Honours second year exam, but it only created more confusion in the 16-day-old imbroglio between the university authorities and the students.
Even the authorities were unsure if they would allow the students to seek provisional admission to the third year or no admission would be provided to them this academic year.

The VC, though, preferred to take a middle path to try and resolve' the impasse by providing a mercy chance' to the students to appear for their exams but disallowing admission this academic year.
Vice chancellor Prof KN Pathak said, "I have approved the recommendation made by the committee that students should be given a special chance to clear their examination backlog but they will be given admission only in July 2006.
The decision has to be cleared by the senate." However according to DUI Prof Veer Singh, no decision is final yet and the committee will meet on Friday morning.
It was the 16th day of the hunger strike by the students who were demanding a special chance to clear their exam backlog as well as the immediate grant of provisional admission in BSC-III so that they could appear in the IIIrd year examination in March 2006.
As per the committee's recommendation the students will only be able to appear in the IIIrd year examination in March 2007.
Interestingly, as per a press release issued by the PU students' council the authorities have assured them that the students who have 90 per cent credits in first and second year will be given a special chance and provisional admission.
However according to the DUI the information given by the students was incorrect. The students said they would not end the hunger strike till the senate cleared their demands in its meeting on December 18.
